Details:

A Sin-eater is a traditional type of spiritual healer who uses ritual means to cleanse the dying of their sins. The Sin-eater would be brought to a dying person's bedside, where a relative would place a crust of bread on the breast of the dying. After praying or reciting a ritual, the Sin-eater would then take the bread and eat it, the act of which would remove the sins from the dying person and transfer them to the Sin-eater, thus allowing the dead person to pass into the afterlife without sin.

This life-size sculptural piece questions and explores what happens to the Sin-eater when he or she dies. Here we have a figure which is imploding into itself, sprouting wings and transforming into a demon as it descends into the afterlife... still clutching in its once-human hand, a crust of bread.
