This painting depicts Saint Sebastian as a woman.

Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of archers and soldiers. According to Catholic legend, popular during the Italian Renaissance, Sebastian entered the Roman army because there could he assist the martyrs without arousing suspicion. After his plan was discovered, he was ordered to death. His body was tied to a tree, pierced with arrows, and he was left for dead. Still alive, St. Sebastian recovered, but refused to flee or give up his cause. Some time later, after denouncing the emperor for his cruelty to Christians, Sebastian's death sentence was finally carried out, by being beaten to death with clubs.

I decided to depict Sebastian as a woman in this painting for several reasons. According to my knowledge, this has never before been done. Sebastian's story is one of strength, determination and purpose, and women were not typically given this role in legends of earlier times.
